Today is Remembrance Day, so the kids are home from
school (they had a 4-day long weekend!); they had
Remembrance Day chapels last week, though I'm not sure the
younger ones really grasp the significance. Right now
they're over at Grandpa & Grandma's, watching their daily
allotment of TV. Except for Jenny - she's house-bound except
for essentials, as she's so hard to get any place (Mike
ended up carrying her back from Grandma's when we were there
for supper on Sunday).
Yup, the saga continues for Jenny. Last week we finally
figured out she was suffering from withdrawal from her
medication, so we upped the dosage a bit to give her some
relief, and we'll take her off more slowly now. She is not
fun to have in the house (again, remember this is because of
her illness, not because we don't like Jenny the person),
and she doesn't like us not doing things for her; she can
argue all day long, given the chance! And yet when we were
at some friends' place for supper last Thursday evening and
they taught us the old game "spin the plate", she was off
her chair in an instant to pick up the "plate" before it hit
the floor. Again, her actions or lack thereof are so
confusing. Especially when she's going through withdrawal -
we don't want to "punish" her by not doing things for her
when the medication is making things so hard for her, and
yet we're afraid that if we start doing everything for her,
she'll not make any effort herself and end up back in the
hospital again. We are constantly second-guessing ourselves
in how to deal with her. Pray!!! We don't see any
improvements, and wonder what is next. But it will take a
month or so to get her off her medication, then it's almost
Christmas time, then in January she'll be in the Gordon
Townsend school for 6 weeks. So maybe we should wait until
all that is finished before looking for something else.
Choices!
Jenny's aide, Sarah, seems to be really good. She has
worked with an autistic child before, so is no stranger to
"special needs". She is also "no-nonsense", so will not be
easily swayed by Jenny's pleas! Pray for her as she endures
some of Jenny's toughest days yet at school.
Mike is VERY happy to be at home again, and he has
started wading through his pile of work. Maybe one of these
days we can work on the Oroko dictionary again.
Jenny got a chance to chat with Rachel Friesen on Sunday
morning, and Mike had a good talk with Dan & Lisa yesterday.
Friesens are subbing at the hostel in the capital city for a
while, so they have a good internet connection :) It sounds
like the book of Jonah in Oroko will be out very soon,
followed by the Joseph story before Christmas - very
exciting!!! There are LOTS of teaching opportunities from
these two publications.
Please pray with us for Dwayne and Crystal - Dwayne was
one of the pastors from here who has been so sick, now on
sick leave from the church. He was approved for a liver
transplant, and yesterday had the opportunity for the actual
operation. But when they opened him up, they found cancer in
a duct, so they just closed him up. He probably doesn't have
long. 4 young boys.
Our week was rather mild all in all - Kenneth, Laura, and
Mike got their blood tests (and the doctor let us know that
everything was normal), and Jenny and Kenneth had a very
quick check with a dental person to verify they needed
sealants. Jenny had an appointment on Friday with a medical
person here in town who will be seeing Jenny while our
normal dr is in Nigeria for over a month (one of his friends
made this neat operating table on bicycle wheels that they
can transport into the bush!!). And we again enjoyed our
"Brunch Bunch" gathering on Saturday. On Sunday, Christy had
her debut with a worship team in church (there are 4 groups
who rotate, so she and Mike are on separate teams and each
help out only once every 4 weeks). I enjoyed not having to
teach Sunday School for a change :), as it was a holiday
weekend so there was open session for all the kids.
Ok, that's all for now. Jenny has appointments in Calgary
on Thursday (her usual dr meeting, then at the metabolic
clinic, finally).
